As the R&D Manager, you will lead a multidisciplinary team of Research Geophysicists, Data Scientists, and Scientific Software Developers within our Rio de Janeiro R&D hub. You will serve as the strategic bridge between pure scientific research and scalable production software, overseeing the development of next-generation seismic processing and machine learning (ML) solutions. Your primary objective is to accelerate R&D milestones while fostering a culture of technical excellence, professional maturity, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Responsibilities
- Team Leadership: Direct and mentor a diverse team, including direct reports under the Research and Technology and Data Science departments.
- Strategic Translation: Act as the primary "translator" between geophysical theory, machine learning experimentation, and production-grade software engineering.
- Project Oversight: Manage the end-to-end lifecycle of transforming experimental prototypes into robust, high-quality software solutions.
- Workflow Optimization: Drive the integration of AI/ML into physics-based processes and identify bottlenecks in traditional seismic processing sequences.
- Standard Advocacy: Champion software engineering best practices (clean code, CI/CD, modular architecture) and experimental rigor across all research activities.
- Resource Management: Balance technical debt with the need to meet aggressive research milestones, ensuring code health and reproducibility.
- External Representation: Represent the team’s innovations in external research activities, publications, and technical forums.

Qualifications
- Education: PhD in Geophysics, Physics, Machine Learning, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field.
- Technical Experience:

- Significant experience in Python and its scientific stack (NumPy, SciPy, PyTorch).
- Familiarity with High-Performance Computing (HPC), GPU-optimized kernels (CUDA), or C++ for performance-critical applications.
- Experience with Seismic Processing sequences, signal processing, or wave physics.

- Domain Expertise: Demonstrated expertise and publications in modern ML architectures (e.g., ViT/U-Nets) and/or advanced geophysical inversion theory.
- Infrastructure Knowledge: Exposure to pipeline orchestration (Airflow/Prefect), containerization (Docker), and large-scale scientific data formats (Zarr).
