TGS provides scientific data and intelligence to the global energy sector, enabling energy for all by unlocking vital, data‑driven solutions and knowledge. Through an extensive and diverse energy data library, advanced analytics, cloud‑based applications, and specialized services, we work in a way that is Passionate, Results‑Driven, Collaborative, and Responsible.

Serves as a Research Geophysicist within the Rio de Janeiro R&D team, focusing on the acceleration and automation of the seismic processing lifecycle. This role is a key technical bridge, working in daily collaboration with Data Scientists to find the right blend of conventional signal processing and physics-based techniques with integrating geophysical first principles into AI-driven workflows. The primary objective is to develop and implement innovative algorithms for seismic processing that significantly reduce turnaround time while maintaining or enhancing the rigorous standards of geophysical QC.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and refine geophysical algorithms with a specific focus on automation.
  • Partner closely with Data Scientists to design ML and hybrid workflows that combine traditional signal-processing and physics-based techniques with ML-based solvers.
  • Design automated, objective QC metrics that leverage geophysical attributes to validate the integrity of AI-processed data.
  • Identify bottlenecks in traditional processing sequences and propose accelerated alternatives using high-performance computing (HPC) or GPU-optimized kernels.
  • Collaborate closely with data scientists, domain experts, and cross-functional teams on framing ML based solutions.
  • Support the translation of research ideas into scalable production solutions and workflows.
  • Participate in external research activities, publications, or technical forums.

Key Competencies:

  • Seismic Theory: Deep understanding of wave propagation, signal processing (F-K, Tau-P, Curvelet), and inversion theory.
  • Processing Fluency: Hands-on experience with the seismic processing sequence (from field tapes to migration) and an understanding of where "human-in-the-loop" delays occur.
  • Technical Collaboration: Works effectively within multi-lead, interdisciplinary environments.
  • Professional Maturity: Operates independently on complex technical problems while seeking alignment when appropriate.

Qualifications:

  • PhD (or MSc with strong applied or research experience) in Geophysics, Physics or a related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in seismic processing through research, applied projects, or open-source contributions.
  • Strong programing skills with proficiency in Python is required; experience with C++ for performance-critical seismic kernels is a significant advantage.
  • Communication: Ability to communicate complex geophysical concepts to non-geophysicists (data scientists and software engineers), as well as explaining new ideas to processing geophysicists and customers.

If you meet the qualifications and are passionate about contributing to our team, we encourage you to submit your application by 04/13/2026.
